Experiance. My neice's doctor is accross the river in Belpre. She had an appointment today for a checkup. So after school I am taking her accross the bridge to belpre. There are two bridges you can take. The Belpre Bridge that is in downtown parkersburg or the Memorial Bridge which is closer to Vienna WV. I was downtown and halfway accross the bridge. Traffic can be a bit locked up at that point and it was. Standstill ... waiting for the light to turn green. Then my car shivers so much that it moves backwards a bit and my neice screams like mad. I look around and everyone has the same look on thier face. Like WTF!!! A River Barge had hit the fuckin bridge. I am not too far away from Point Pleasant and I really didnt wanna see the mothman.

RR ..> Everyone was fine. It scared us but nothing more than that. It was a pain in the ass to get OFF the bridge because the police on both sides came and made us exit the bridge on the Parkersburg side. Also there were several emergency vehicles coming to the bridge in downtown rush traffic. By the time I got off the bridge my neices Dr. Appointment had come and gone and there as no use to go to Belpre anyway.

I just found out today that the barge actually hit the railroad bridge that is a few feet away from the belpre bridge. I cant believe it still made my car shake like that.

Wow....good thing that you can doggy-paddle in case the bridge would've collapsed...

Whats amazing is that my car shook at all. Especially if it hit the bridge next to us. That and it took them a couple hours to get us OFF the bridge whiole trying to keep others from getting ON the bridge. I will say that emergency crews were very quick to get out there.

I just get out of driver's seat the exit before the bridge...I just close my eyes....until it's over...then back to the driver seat...She freaks out around traffic...

Well figure those pylons are thick and deep into the river bed and when they got hit it probably shook the soil in a big radius...thus shaking you and the bridge you were on.

chi, When I lived in New Jersey I used to have to go over the Bayonne Bridge in and out of Bayonne. It never failed when I was going into Bayonne traffic would be at a complete stop for 20 minutes while you sat on that bridge as IT BOUNCED UP AND DOWN. It wasn't a suspension bridge either.

They have actually widened the Bridge on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel..It is 2 lane in each direction now. The tunnels still bottle neck into 1 lane each way.

Irish ... i guess that would make sense. I have never been good at physics. At least there wasnt enough damage to close the bridge.

Growing up here in P-burg, I guess you get used to bridges. There are 4 over the Ohio River, 3 over the Little Kanawa, and that doesnt cover all the rickety creek bridges.

Same here in Cheat Lake...I grew up a 1 minute walk to the lake... 2 bridges right beside my house...There's an interstate bridge (not scary) and an old iron bridge (shakes like it's going to crumble everytime a car drives over it)....scares the shit out of me...and always has.

PJ, I have to go to a wedding in August in Virginia Beach....will I get to travel through this tunnel? You don't have to...You have two other options and both involve Bridge tunnels. This however may be your best option because the Tunnel is 2 lanes going in each direction where your other options are single lane bottle necks......... You have the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel RT 13, or the hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel I-64, or the Monitor Merrimac I-664. Your other option is Driving to Petersburg and coming in through US 58 in Suffolk. But add 3 hours to your trip.
