GIBBONS GETS HOT: Cardinal Gibbons drained five 3-pointers in the early going of the second half to spark its rally past Reidsville 62-54 in a 2-A east sectional championship.
Gibbons (20-7) gave itself a chance to win the game in the second half with productive work in the first half without standout Melissa Shafer.
Shafer picked up two fouls and had to sit out most of the first half, but Reidsville led by only three at the half.
"We didn't shoot very well in the first half, but we did rebound enough to stay in the game," Crusaders coach Jessica Lowe said. "When we came out in the third quarter, they were in a 1-3-1 zone, and we lit them up with five 3-pointers."
Chloe Stapleton and Shafer hit two of those 3-pointers apiece, while Lauren Wasilick added the other.
Reidsville temporarily reclaimed the lead when Shafer left the court with her third foul, but the Crusaders hit a momentum-changing bucket at the end of the third quarter and went back on top.
Stapleton knocked home a game-high 24 points, while Shafer, a four-year varsity starter, scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half.
"We can shoot the ball, and when teams play us in a zone, they give us the 3-point shot," Lowe said. "If you make them, you shoot them out of the zone.
"We've been shooting the ball very well the last couple of games."
The 2-A eastern regional semifinals for girls games will be held Thursday night.
"It means a great deal for the school, the team and the kids," Lowe said.
"They've worked extremely hard this year, and it's very rewarding to see your effort come through."
