How freaking ironic! One of the teams playing for the one open Wild Card spot tonight is the Tampa Bay Rays, who only averaged about 18,000 fans per game this past year. Tampa and Miami continue to keep MLB teams in their ambivalent cities, while Charlotte, with a city population equal to both of those Florida towns combined, has no major league baseball. With a tradition of great college baseball all around it and major league hungry inhabitants, the Queen City of the South deserves one of the Florida teams a lot more than Tampa or Miami deserves a team. It's time for MLB to unplug from Florida and come to a region where teams will be supported and attended. If Tampa wins tonight, I can think of no more fitting tribute to that town than to have the Rays announce their departure to Charlotte beginning next year!

If Francona is NOT manager of the year, then something is seriously wrong. This team has no .300 hitter, only two guys with 20+ HRs, and a pretty strange looking starting rotation. And they won 92 games.
I think they've got a shot to do some damage in the postseason, too. First hurdle will be to get past Tampa. They stack up pretty well against them, so we'll see how this goes.

Hopefully the Pirates can get a win tonight. It will be incredibly anti-climactic if their first playoff appearance in more than 20 years lasts only one game.
