Legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden was on the Paul Finebaum Show Tuesday afternoon and he had some interesting words for one of the Seminoles most famous players.
Finebaum brought up the former Heisman Trophy winner and his off-field issues. This was the exchange:
Finebaum: Jameis Winston, many people thought he was an embarrassment to your great university of Florida State. He won the Heisman, won a national championship, he was the No. 1 player chosen (in the NFL draft), but the controversy never seemed to leave him, including on the day he was selected, he was sitting there in Bessemer, Ala. on one of the greatest nights of his life and he flashes the crab legs. What are your thoughts on Jameis Winston?
Bowden: I think it’s a consensus among Florida State fans and boosters that he was an embarrassment in a lot of ways to the university. He won a lot of ball games, probably one of the best football players that ever attended Florida State, but he hurt himself off the field. The good news is that he’s young enough to get over that, ya know it? And he’s gotta do that. But he just can’t make those junior high school decisions that he made while he was in college.
Winston recently filed a counterclaim against a former FSU student who said he raped her in December 2012, he was accused of stealing crab legs from a Publix grocery store, jumped on a table on campus and yelled inappropriate things, and dressed for a game he was not allowed to play in, to name a few of his off-the-field issues.

He must be one of those haters who is jealous of FSU and their success.

I totally agree with Bowden but lets face it, Bobby B was never known for his discipline or bringing in only top character players.

I don't care for Jameis the person - but he got skills.
Will he grow up - remains to be seen.
He should have matured in college but he didn't - at least not very much.

I don't think Bowden said anything particularly inflammatory when you see the whole thing in context. Pauwl used the term embarrassing in the question. There is no doubt Jameis did some things that were not entirely flattering for him. And he also did some pretty good things on and off the field.
One thing I have yet to see is any teammate say he is not a hard worker or great leader.

Actually, Texas Tech did its own bullshit from 1992-1995.... where they had Bam Morris and Byron HAnspard...2 of the greatest CFB of the last 30 years, both winners of the D. Walker award. Hanspard finished the career with a 0.0 GPA..... and put TTU on probation. Spyke Dykes was the "legend" that over saw that shit.... Didn't win much, because the old SWC was the biggest cheating conference EVER.....

But 2 of the best RBs in the last 30 years yes. At least in the top 25 of RB's..... Since they won Doak Walkers, and only 25 have been awarded since 1990..... Hate all you want, Bam Morris and Byron Hansoard were awesome.

So the SEC has had at least 5 better than them, Nebraska prolly 3, Texas prolly 2, OU prolly 2 at least... Do you want me to go through the B1G and Pac... They prolly aren't in the top 30 in the past 30.

Lol..... A)TTU had ZERO offensive lineman get drafted in any of the record years.... B) was against the great SWC, and the big year from Byron was in the Big12 against national champion contenders. Don't hate bro, just acknowledge....

I mean, if you wanted to compare Crabtree to any of our WRs ever, he wins hands down. Not really, i was actually shocked to see him tied with him..... But Bam won the Doak Walker with a Brilliant season on a crappy TTU team. Went on to have a successful NFL career (and got arrested too that killed it)..... I mean, i was like 11 when that all happened with Bam and like 4 or something when Walker did it, so i can't campare seeing them play, just the # of yards, and Bama did not go to a Bowl, did it in 11 games...... did Hershel play 12 or 13?

They did not count bowl game stats in 1982. It was 11 games. That was the year he won the Heisman. Texas Tech, however, did play 12 games in 1993 when Bam won the Doak Walker. They also lost to a 5-6 UGA team by a score of 52-37 (the score on Wikipedia is wrong). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Texas_Tech_Red_Raiders_football_team

Dang.... how about that for a non-conference sked in 1993?!!?! Nebraska, UGA, NC State..... Then played OU in the bowl..... You are right, Bam played 11 games in the regular season for 1752 yards.... Walker played same in regular season in '82... i was born in '82 FTR so no, i never saw him play If TTU had finished better than 6-5 that year, Bam would have won the heisman too i am sure.
