On the 7th kick VR determines goal, Sweden wins, U.S. out, in a game that they completely outplayed the Swedes, but couldn't put one in.

US looked a lot better in this game than the group stage, but alas, couldn't put in that finishing touch. Plenty of opportunities. Sweden GK was very good. All in all, not overly surprising given the play in the group stage, but still too early an exit given expectations.

For the first time jn my life I could not give a damn about a team "supposedly" representing my country. Didn't pull against them but didn't pull for them either.

Ripinoe, a true POS.
She should have kept a knee and given her spot to a younger lady who actually wanted to play for the right reasons.

Pretty frustrating to see live. The good news is the hotel (lots of USA fans) was very quiet last night. Trying to decide whether we keep our finals tickets or cut the vacation short and head home next week sometime.

If it were me uscg, you've gone all that way, you've got the tickets, I think it'd still be a quality game to go to at a very unique event! Either way, hope the trip has been enjoyable even if the results of the US team hasn't been.

This team looked uninspired and just never seemed to want to be the dominant team they used to be. They looked like they believed the press clippings about themselves and all the had to do was lace up their cleats and show up and they would win.
I suspect more people in the US were rooting against them than for them, me included, and getting bounced was good.

I think my wife just suggested we cut it short because she misses the dogs.

Why cheer against the national team because of the politics of a handful of stars? And yet fans still cheer for scumbag athletes that are actual criminals? My BIL went to Clemson and is a huge Deshaun Watson apologist but hates Lebron because he speaks out on politics. I don’t get it. I think your reason for their loss is off as well. It’s mostly attributable to terrible coaching. He got the tactics wrong as well as the personnel wrong. It was clear that Rapinoe and Morgan were aging out of the team and yet he relied heavily on them. Based on her club form and how she played in the WWC Rapinoe had no business being on this team. And FFS, play Smith centrally, put Thompson on the wing and then bring Morgan on as a 2nd half substitute when the defense started to tire. The USA was dominant against Sweden but missed chance after chance to score. Controlling a game against the #3 ranked team doesn’t really indicate that they are resting on their laurels.

What about the other teams they played and the horrible offensive production from this team? I get having one bad game but all the games in the WWC were uninspiring. I think the reason people rooted against the team is because of how vocal the stars were in a variety of issues. The kneeling for the anthem, demanding equal pay, inserting themselves into arguments with trump, etc. I think people want athletes to be proud to be playing for the US, especially when they represent the US in another country.

I didn't root against them. I didn't root for them. I have never, ever felt that about any team representing this country...even if it were tiddlywinks. It is apathy, which might be worse than cheering against them. I find them repulsive and while it is true all might not agree with some of them, I didn't notice any one criticizing their viewpoint. I simply didn't care, which makes me sad because for me right now, there is a vacuum of sports and I very much like soccer.

That’s my point, they rolled out the same lineup with the same problems for all three group games and got poor results. Then changed it up for Sweden and played much better (but were still profligate in the final third). 87% of the minutes played were all played by the same players. That tells you Andonovski didn’t even try to find better tactics/personnel even when it wasn’t working. That’s coaching. I get why, (as an example) it just bothers me that a large portion of Braves fans were ok with Ozuna playing after a domestic violence charge but yet people have an issue with athletes expressing different political opinions. Or why is it a bigger deal with people when athletes make a political statement versus an anti-Semitic one? As for the equal pay, I agree with them having equal pay for activities with the national team. Olympic athletes make the same amount of money for a gold medal regardless of gender. So why shouldn’t the women make the same money as the men when they both had a round of 16 exit from the World Cup?

For most of us I suspect, it has zilch to do with athletes having different viewpoints. That is perfectly ok. It is the method used and the timing of that method. What I find hard to understand why it is constantly ok for one side to be offended by everything but wrong for the other side to feel similarly upset. Their intent is not to attack a problem, but intentionally designed to divide us. No one can convince me otherwise. It works. It is absolutely their right to do it. It is mine to despise it.

On another topic USCG what did you think of the massive amount of physical play in this WWC? I watched the WWC last time but don’t remember the mugging, pushing, grabbing of arms and jerseys, and downright tackling and missing the ball not being called like it was. I was shocked to see the amount of hip checks when a player had the ball, sometimes basically pushing with the ball out of bounds.
It might have been the benefit of watching the game on TV in high def but the amount of flopping is just as bad as the men’s game now. It’s getting hard to watch matches now.

To me, the biggest issue is the FIFA mandate of all female crews but some federations don’t have enough world class refs. So we end up with inexperienced refs. But you are right, it certainly degraded the quality of play. One change that would fix most of it is for the refs to actually give yellow cards for non ball playing tactical fouls. These should be automatic but some refs seem afraid to issues cards, so it escalates.
