There will need to be a rule against this type of thing. They placed 6 players on waivers(everyone they traded for a month ago) in order to be under the cap so they can receive a 2nd round CB pick as opposed to a 4th round if/when Ohtani signs elsewhere. It could potentially help a team leapfrog a team they're trailing to get into the postseason. For nothing more than paying the rest of their salary for the year.
The Angels were idiots for not trading Ohtani last month, anyway. They already had one of the worst farm systems in the game, only to give up their 2,3 and 8th ranked prospects for a long shot postseason berth. Now they release the players they got in exchange for those prospects so they can get one 2nd round collective bargaining pick when Ohtani leaves. This is the worst run franchise in all of baseball.

I think I'm with swan. The Angels tried to compete and put all these resources into getting rentals and then just flopped. They couldn't even get to the playoffs with two of the best talents in baseball ever seen in the last 20 years. What they're doing now is just ridiculous.

The Athletics say hello. The A's don't have the resources that the Angels have. The A's finished with 86 wins two years ago, won the West 3 years ago, won 97 games and made the playoffs 4, and 5 years ago. Guess what the Angels did in that same time with Trout and Ohtani to build around? Scouting and farms systems are pretty important. Maybe someone should tell the Angels that. They could have kept 3 of their top 8 prospects this year and added another 4, with at the very least one being a top 100 prospect. Now what are they going to do when Ohtani leaves and pretty much all they have is a now injury plagued Trout and likely the worst farm system in the game?

Astros have become the team they are today by building a very good farm system.

Astros have become the team they are today by building a very good farm system. It's why the Braves are where they are. And the Dodgers. And the Orioles. And the Rays. It's why the Cubs were able to win their first WS in over 100 years ago back in '16. This is why I get irritated with lazy, hack, sports journalists accusing teams of "tanking". Every team I just mentioned was accused of it, while the strategy of teams like the Mets were lauded for their amazing efforts to spend as much money as possible.

It's also why the Cubs are contending right now. That and some shrewd deals in free agency and trade. Theo has done a great job reloading the team after one really bad year in 2022

Having a good GM is just as important as the field manger for a baseball franchise.

The A's have done everything they can to alienate their fans. It is one thing to take on a city, but to alienate the ones that make the revenue....that is poorly running a franchise. Not even the Houston Oilers when they moved and became the Titans were that bad.
