Big race tomorrow… I’m not the biggest runner, but I’ve worked to get better. I’m doing a half-marathon relay… the guy I’m running with is running 6.5 miles and my leg is 6.94 miles… so 13.44 total. Our goal is 2 hours.

Went great… we finished at 1 hour 52 minutes and I averaged 8:23 per mile. It was fairly hilly and currently hurts a lot! Lol

Coincidentally, the Frankfurt Marathon was held yesterday and we went and watched part of it as the course came pretty close to where we live. It is generally considered one of the fastest marathons in the world because it is mostly flat. The winning time was a stupid 2:04:53, which is a minute off the course record. Fastest woman was 2:19:27. I might be able to beat that on a bike.

Congrats Brad on your accomplishment! I gotta admit though, I didn't know what to expect when I opened this thread.

Years ago I ran in a race in Atlanta I believe was named The Peachtree Road Run (10K race). Mid to late 79's. In July - so it was hot, humid and hilly. The only American runner to win an Olympic gold medal, Frank Shorter was in the race. I finished about ten minutes behind him. My time was somewhere around 38 minutes. There were over 10,000 runners - one of the largest road races in those days. I was on my way to Gatlinburg Tenn for a vacation with my wife and first son. I stopped in Atlanta for the race. Ran the race in the morning and then back to the motel to shower and we were on our way to the Smokey Mountains. Great time in my life. I loved running.
Keep running Brad.

Thanks all, pretty proud of my accomplishment. I have a few more 5ks I’m signed up for, but the next big race is on May 5th, my moms birthday, so I’ll be running in her remembrance. That is a half marathon, not a relay.

Jumping from a 5K (3.1 miles) to a half marathon (13.1 miles) is a big step. You will need to increase your weekly training schedule.

I did the Peachtree Road Race in college, but we didn’t treat it like a race. We stopped at every bar along the course and had a shot or a beer.

How much do you run in a week? In October I’ve been averaging 28 miles a week. That is a pretty good base for a 1/2 marathon. Rule of thumb use to be one could run about three times your daily average. Running is great for your health. Do you like to run?

The challenge is the winter as I hate running on a treadmill. Run outside. I just ordered an extra pair of running running shoes and drilled in my own lugs on a pair for snow/ice/slush when I lived up north. I’m with you, I can’t do treadmills. It’s takes a boring sport and makes it even worse.

If you ever had a runner's high - one could not call outside running boring. I have run in a lot of different environments. True - running in places like Houston in August is not fun - but it is a great training base. And running lets one see a lot of scenery that you don't see while riding or driving in a car. I would still be running but I wore out my right knee and have a knee replacement. I can't run but I still do some walking. Uscgamecocks, Are you back in Texas?

Driving back to Texas from Vermont this weekend and will get to Texas on Tuesday. Then I leave for Vegas on the 14th and then Boston on the 21st but after that I’ll be home all the way until mid January.
Maybe it was all those years of soccer, but I find running super boring. So at this point I run once a week for about 5 miles or so.

Wednesday my cousin is playing in a football game at Fenway. Not sure what time it is, but if it’s early enough to be done at a reasonable hour, I’ll have some free time that evening.

Also, treadmills can really screw up your stride/running motion.

Maybe so, but I can remember times when I would go for a long run and seem like I was on a cloud. But not so during my long training runs in the Houston August days. Those 13 mile runs on Sunday days in August were pretty brutal. The last parts of the runs were in survival mode - just barley moving.
