If you have seen the video of the on ice death of the minor league player, what is your opinion of it. I have seen a LOT of outrage and calling for charges to be brought against the other player. IMO it looked like he intentionally kicked his foot up. I saw no contact to him previous that would cause him to lose balance and fall. Don't think he intended the outcome, but he really looked to commit a dirty play on purpose.

Erock, it happened while I was in Jacksonville. Heard about it before I left, but didn't see the video until I got home Sunday night. I wasn't going to watch it because I knew it would be awful. On Monday night a friend of mine said British police were looking into potential charges so I made myself view it twice. I cannot go back and watch it again. The kid played for the Penguins a couple of games and for their farm team in Wilkes Barre for a couple of years. Players from Crosby to others who played with him down there were nothing but positive about his attitude and effort. It really shook them.
The video I saw was not very good....quite distant and a bit grainy. The guy who cut him bounced off another guy and could have simply lost his balance when his leg went up that high. The kid's teammates did not believe it intentional and feel for the other guy. But several former NHL players think it might have been intentional. Honestly, I don't know. I cannot imagine anyone purposely trying to get their skates up that high and badly hurting someone. Sean Avery among others believe it was intentional. Mark Methot thinks it was in no way intentional. From what folks are saying the guy who cut him is totally distraught and I have not heard anything that would lead one to believe they had bad blood between them. It was horrifying.
The Penguins immediately required all their minor league players to wear neck protection. They advised it for the NHL Pens, but cannot enforce without the NHL Players Association agreeing to it. T.J. Oshie helped develope a material that would stop a blade from slitting a throat or a wrist. But players don't use it because it is so hot and they sweat profusely in those arenas. Now, a bunch of players are practicing with it and Eric Karlson, the Pens future Hall of Fame defender said it didn't seem to bother him that much and that players need to think about their loved ones, even if they aren't crazy about wearing the stuff.
I don't know the answer to your question. I believe it a horrible accident unless proven otherwise.

My son plays hockey, I refuse to watch it out of fear! Please get him to wear that neck and wrist protection. Beautiful game but those skates are dangerous.

T.J. Oshie is one of the first to wear the neck protection.
