Twenty years ago. Where has the time gone? Twenty years ago today I was participating in a Memorial Service for Chief Warrant Office 4 Bruce Smith and 1st Lieutenant Brian Slavenas from the Iowa National Guard. The CH47 Chinook was carrying Soldiers to Baghdad to go on their first R&R after the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On November 2 they were hit with an RPG. Sixteen American Soldiers paid the ultimate price that day and 20 more were wounded. Up to that point, it was the single costliest day in the Iraqi War. Bruce and Brian flew me around Iraq in 2003, from Mosul to Falujah to Al Asad and Balad and beyond. They and their crew were true professionals and risked their lives every time they took off on a mission. I never fail to think about them and those Soldiers as we approach Veterans Day. It is courage and honor like theirs that allow the rest of us to enjoy the coming holiday. Bless them All.

Unfortunately some end up paying the ultimate price in combat may God bless those souls. It also makes me aware that all who have served were willing to pay the ultimate price they just weren't chosen. All heros in my eyes, thank you for our members who have served.
