The 2023 college football season ended with Michigan winning the first national title since 1997 with a win over Washington in the CFP National Championship game. The focus has already shifted to next season, including way-too-early previews of the biggest games of the season.
ESPN released the top eight college football games that have been officially announced for the upcoming 2024 college football season. Below are ESPN's eight 'can't-miss' games for next season.
Miami at Florida (Aug. 31)
Series History: Miami leads 29-27
This Week 1 matchup could put one of these two head coaches firmly on the hot seat for the rest of the season. Both coaches enter the season with losing records and the fanbases are starting to get restless for better results. Former Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward will also make his debut for the Hurricanes.
Texas at Michigan (Sep. 7)
Series History: Texas leads 1-0
Both teams made runs to the College Football Playoff last season and this will be a massive test for Sherrone Moore in his first season as the head coach of the Wolverines. Quarterback Quinn Ewers led the Longhorns to a massive road upset against Alabama last season and will be looking to make another statement against a talented Michigan defense.
Georgia at Alabama (Sep. 28)
Series History: Alabama leads 43-26-4
Alabama has won eight of the past nine matchups against the Bulldogs, including last season's SEC Championship game. Head coach Kalen DeBoer will be making his SEC coaching debut against one of the most complete teams in the nation. This will be a crucial game in determining who will be the favorite for the SEC Championship game next season. Another spectacular battle between Jalen Milroe and Carson Beck will be must-see television on Sep. 28.
Ohio State at Oregon (Oct. 12)
Series History: Ohio State leads 9-1
Oregon stunned Ohio State in a 35-28 upset in 2021, but this will be one of the biggest matchups in the new Big Ten next season. The Ducks have been one game away from the College Football Playoff for two consecutive seasons and a win against the Buckeyes could put Oregon in perfect position for a postseason run. Ohio State revamped the roster and this will be the first big test of the season for transfer quarterback Will Howard.
Georgia at Texas (Oct. 19)
Series History: Texas leads 4-1
Both programs are expected to be in contention for the expanded College Football Playoff and this game could have massive seeding implications. The Bulldogs already have a tough road test against the Crimson Tide and the Longhorns could make a huge statement with a win over a Georgia team that has only lost two games in the past three years.
Florida State at Notre Dame (Nov. 9)
Series History: Florida State leads 6-5
Florida State will be looking to make a statement after being snubbed from the College Football Playoff last season. Notre Dame will need this win for its CFP resume as the Fighting Irish will be competing for an At-Large bid next season in the expanded 12-team playoff. Two transfer quarterbacks (DJ Uiagalelei & Riley Leonard) will headline this massive matchup.
Michigan at Ohio State (Nov. 30)
Series History: Michigan leads 61-51-6
Michigan has won three consecutive games over Ohio State for the first time since 1995-97. The Buckeyes will be looking to prevent the first four-game losing streak to the Wolverines since 1988-91. New Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore defeated the Buckeyes as the interim head coach last season as head coach Jim Harbaugh served the final game of his suspension.
Utah at Oklahoma State (TBD)
Series History: Oklahoma State leads 1-0
Many experts believe this game could determine who the favorite in the new Big 12 will be next season. Quarterback Cam Rising returns from injury as the Utes will look to win the third conference title in the past four seasons. Oklahoma State will look to take the throne in the conference after Texas and Oklahoma depart for the SEC. The Cowboys have made two Big 12 Championship game appearances in the past three seasons and are primed to make a run for their first conference title since 2011.
