Fine Brad. Then tell me how many languages all official government documents should be translated into. How do you make that determination? I have no idea... I just have a problem with changing the concept of our country. Sometimes, when the original concept is used as a basis for upheaval and division, it is better to alter it and apply more specifics to produce more cohesion and unity. Even Krushiev (sp?) saw what was happening when he said something along the lines of 'Why attack the US? We'll just sit back and let them destroy themselves from the inside?'

I just have a problem with changing the concept of our country. Sometimes statements like the last one are taken in general to 'prove' a point. The concept of our country seems like a broad statement, and I could say that ended in 1828 with the Election of Andrew Jackson (whom I like) and democracy replaced the 'republic'. The country stands for a lot of things, and the concept of freedom is a damn important one. Sometimes I think we believe our Founders to be infallable, when they were great, but were not perfect.

there is a reason they left room to amend the constitution...they knew they could never get it exactly right Brad- I think the point of RR's quote is that the Founders never could have known about the highway system, or nukes, or many of the other modern inventions. So part of their brilliance is that the language can be interpreted differently, and added to. The wisdom is that they knew they didn't know everything. They could have never imagined the population of the US would get to 300+ million people and cover the ground that it covers now. I guess I don't think it is as much of an issue as some. But some of the responses on the thread I couldn't let go, even though it probably would have been better if I had just left it alone. Damn youth.

I find it astounding that this is even an issue. This is America (or at least it used to be). Our forefathers that founded this great country spoke English (at least an archaic form of it) and the rest of the world has made inroads into learning it so as to make it the universal language. Now, because we have people coming in that can't speak it and demand that they be accommodated in their own language, we are trying to make it a land of many languages? It's absurd. I can't think of one other country that even gives a thought to changing their national language, or having to justify it's position and usage. And not only that, for the last 200+ years people have come to the US and learned the language to acclimate. What makes these people any different? Bingo. The difference over the last 200 years from the events of today is: the prior immigrants were coming to America to become Americans and participate in the system; the latest immigrants come here for no other reason than to make money. They have no interest in becoming American or abandoning their former nationalist loyalties.

Racism? RACISM!!! What in the blue fuck are these people taking about? ? What is racist about insisting your business be conducted in english.....IN AN ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRY??? Please, funnel these assholes into an arena and report them to the CSA (please refer to my thread entitled "HS student denied diploma") so we can disembowel them with wooden cooking spoons. I'm sick of these fucking tools pulling the racism card every time something doesn't go there way. Whats next......am I going to be sued by Mrs. Piggy for choosing pulled pork over beef brisket at the local BBQ? "Oh you racist ass! You choose pork in order to eat it and turn it into fecal matter suggesting that pigs thoughout the world are no better than shit! I'll see you in court!" No Mrs. Piggy, you'll see me from my dinner plate, Bitch! It's not about racism. It's about our country's identity. Sure it's a land of opportunity (or was, anyways). Sure we pride ourselves on being diverse. But somewhere the line has to be drawn. I am not....NOT willing to speak any other language (though I can speak Spanish) where I deam English to be appropriate. For instance, while visiting Miami I visited 6 different drive-up windows before patronizing a business. I was hungry as an orphan but I refuse to spend my money at a restaurant in the United States of America where employees refuse to speak my language. Let these misfits go to Russia and try to get away with that shit. Or let them try to convert Iran to a Spanish speaking country. That isn't happening. Know why? because Russia and Iran will NOT put up with their cry-baby asses and they'd most likely end up dead within a week. Why does American government tolerate this bullshit? And WHY WON'T AMERICAN CITIZENS VOTE PEOPLE INTO OFFICE WHO WILL TAKE A FIRM, UNWAIVERING STANCE AGAINST IT? I'll tell you why. Because American government is weak-minded and afraid it might piss somebody off.....step on their toes. Ok, I'm done.

Remember the thing I posted the other day about the IRS notifying Overhill Farms that they had 260 people in their plant who had fake SSNs? The company fired all 260 (for at minimum, lying on their applications, should be for financial fraud) and now the union is marching around outside Overhill properties with professionally printed signs IN SPANISH saying Overhill's actions were injust and racist. Never mind Overhill has to comply with the law or face huge finds and prison time for management.

I don't think that the language thing is a liberal stance, more of a self-serving/political stance. The millions that are affected are prime targets of unions and the unions use them in to increase their political power with the politicians making the laws. Number one political campaign contributor category in California -- the unions, and by a landslide even Achmenblahblah would appreciate.

Hell, half of the time when I'm arguing with you Cons, from a, somewhat, lib stance, I really kind of agree with you guys, but I consider all sides of an argument, and look at what is best for everyone, not just me.

I lived in many countries, and none of them would tolerate the shit that we do. Its funny that you guys brought up Italy. There was Italians that I knew, who spoke perfect english. But they refused to speak english to Americans. They would make you struggle through Italian or they just wouldnt talk to you.
My 1st week in Italy, I was hanging out with my friends italian girlfriend at the market. This old lady walked up to me and said something. I didnt understand and my friends girl was translating for me. It went like this,
Oled lady, Your american? Me- yes. why dont you speak Italian? I just got here yesterday. Didnt you know you were comming here? Yes. You should have learned before you got here,
Then she walked off. Japan was the only country I have ever been to where the local will just walk up to you and try to speak your lang.

Tater,
My experiences in Germany and especially Italy was totally different. Every Italian I met tried to speak a bit of English. In fact I tried Italian and they tried to respond in English. France was different, but generally in Germany and Italy I found the opposite to be true.

We ended up trying to teach each other our languages and would sometimes get hysterical at some of the translations we came up with. But I was understanding too and tried to speak German as much as I could. They also seemed to get a degree of self-pride when they could answer me in English. It worked both ways for our mutual benefit.
