She must have been ugly than. Well she wasn't a Michigandier, so no worries there. Even worse, what was her excuse for going there?

Well she wasn't a Michigandier, so no worries there. Even worse, what was her excuse for going there? She couldn't get into UF? She's not ugly, but I didn't say she was bright. Actually though, UM has one of the highest populations of Jewish students in the US, so I think that played a big role too.

We can all speculate about the context of the event, but, we weren't there, so we don't know how it went down. I can get the transcript and then we can speculate all we want... or the CSPAN feed... ;D

I just get a kick out of watching a bunch of Cons getting all riled up over some stupid little BS, that don't mean squat. ;D

This reminds me of the movie "A Few Good Men" when Col. Jessup was on the stand and said "I would appreciate it if the court addressed me as 'Colonel', I think I've earned it." and the Judge replied "And the witness will address me as 'Judge' or 'Your Honor', I know I've earned it". Great comeback.

This is just me but If I had respect for an officer I always addressed them as Sir or Ma'am - if not - I'd use their rank which I as a member of the military I had to respect. So in my mind yes Ma'am shows more respect than yes Senator. Just me and how I dealt with things during my career.
Plenty of sir's on this board. Wish I'd had the pleasure.

I just get a kick out of watching a bunch of Cons getting all riled up over some stupid little BS, that don't mean squat. ;D But it does mean something. The hearing had to do with the levee system in New Orleans, a very important topic (remember Katrina?). The woman was so absorbed with herself that she saw the need to stop the hearing and admonish a General Officer who was being perfectly respectful to her. She wasn't thinking about the levee system at all. She was concentrating on the fact that the General was answering questions with "Yes, ma'am" rather than "Yes, Senator," an absolutely trivial point and a frivolous line of thought given the subject at hand. She was more interested in herself than she was in ensuring the levee system didn't fail the next time a hurricane hits New Orleans. She communicated, with absolute clarity, that she values herself above those she represents. That is not consistent with what I would expect from elected officials but, more times than not, it seems consistent with what we get from them.

I would have thought the same if someone like McCain said the same thing. Petty is petty, no matter what side of the aisle it falls on. Not everything is a Cons/lib issue.

whamil77 - I think you're a naval Captain - the Eagle and an O-6 - there are three Auburn fans on here that I pretty much always agree with on most things even UA stuff - you - PJ and WER - all officers - all supposedly hated Auburn fans - but first and foremost - all brothers in arms - you can't discuss military with anyone who hasn't worn the uniform. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

This is not untypical of Senator Boxer. She has done it before and the General probably should have been briefed ahead of time that she would pull a stunt like this. What a prick.
And please, I never referred to those that worked for me as "underlings". They are subordinates or Soldiers or Marines or whatever, but not underlings.
I would think that an Officer who has dedicated his life to serving his country could have been slipped a note by one of the honorable Senator's aides to ask him to address her as something other than Ma'am.
As others have said, superior Officers in the Army are addressed as Sir or Ma'am. NCOs are addressed as Sergeant. It would be the norm for a Senior Military Officer to address Civilians at a higher rank/position as Ma'am.
Maybe the junior Senator from California should spend a bit more time trying to figure out what to do about California's budget problems than worrying about the difference between Senator and Ma'am. And by the way, shouldn't it be Madam Senator?

Condescending? I thought it was pretty cordial, myself. She asked, "Please." My hearing could be impaired, but I never once heard please before her "request". But then again you would argue that the sun isn't going to really rise in the east either if it were a registered Republican that you were debating. For the record, I'm not a Republican either. ;D

Maybe she should have tried, "General.........". She did not address him properly either. Pathetic, but frankly compared to her Huffington Post piece on Petraeus and implying he was a liar prior to and during the so called Surge, this is small stuff. Like I say, the junior senator pulls this stuff all the time.

When you are in the dock and the folks doing the talking are Senators and Congressmen/women, they don't ask. They tell. Actually tell or implied. And they all enjoy putting on a show for their constituents.

I personally know a Dem Congressman that is also a Naval Reserve that I'm quite certain wouldn''t have gone that route. It doesn't have to be that way.

toph, you are correct. It should not be that way and for some it is not. But I spent a bunch of time briefing senior officers before they went to testify before Congress and we knew who was like that and who wasn't.
And it exists on both sides of the aisle. I have seen Cons every bit as arrogant and rude to the people testifying and far too many are more interested in putting on a show for the home team than really getting to the bottom of an issue.
But no, they are not all like that at all. But far too many are.

Yeah, I take back my benefit of the doubt after seeing her attitude. Now that this got the press that it did, anyone with balls that goes before her should call her "Ma'am." Or Babs sounds good too.

Once again. Anyone who isn't a complete egomaniac would not have responded the way that she did.
Quit wasting time on b.s. and let the man answer your question ma'am.

After seeing the video I think I know what my responce would have been. He has the time in to collect a good retirement. My responce would have been this:
Yes I could call you senator, but I wouln't. Respect is something that is earned, not voted on. When you can show 1/10 of the service I have given this country them maybe some one will respect you. If you do not like the respectful term "ma'am" then from here on out I will refer to you as the bitch on the bench. What is your next question BITCH.
