Barbara Boxer: Please Call Me 'Senator'Overheard at a Senate hearing yesterday: "Could you say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?' It's just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. I'd appreciate it." --Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to Brigadier General Michael Walsh during Senate hearing Tuesday, when he the general repeatedly said, "Yes, ma'am," and "No, ma'am," when answering Boxer's questions at hearing she chaired on New Orleans' levee system. www.politicsdaily.com/2009/06/17/please-call-me-senator/

Yes, he should be ashamed of himself for being polite and courteous...

Good for her. She SHOULD be addressed as Senator. I'm wondering if the General addressed the male senators as Yes'sir and No'sir? Seems more of a military thing than a dis-respect thing to me. Oh, and one other thing, where's your "get back in the kitchen" emoticon?

LOL, rhv! ;D
She should have said "please address me as Senator," and left it at that. She didn't have to rationalize the request.
It may seem bitchy on her part, but I compare this to my experience in the court room. I would NEVER address a female judge as Ma'am. You address them as "Your Honor" just as you do a male judge. Maybe this Senator context is similar. Just a thought.

My ex-gf's dad always reminded me to call him Doctor instead of Mr. That kind of irked me. I won't ever make anyone call me Dr. when I get my PhD. I'm not putting the years of effort into getting it just so people have to speak an extra two f*cking syllables in front of my name. It seems really petty.

I wonder if she got anything done about the levees while she was being a complete bitch to the Corps of Engineers General who was trying to do his job? My guess is no. She was too busy publicly humiliating a career Military Officer who was being nothing but respectful to her.

I would say that is 'cordial', not humiliating.

Oh, and one other thing, where's your "get back in the kitchen" emoticon? You don't think the generals address Obama as Mr. President? But I hear what you're saying. The military trains people to refer to officers as 'sir', not Lt. or whatever rank when answering in the affirmative or negative. Can anyone confirm that "Ma'am" is used when the superior officer is a female?

Sen Boxer is just demanding respect she other wise would not get. Most respect is earned. I imagine her account is running low.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll bet that General has his underlings address him as, "Yes sir, General sir!!" Tony - yes/no Sir or Ma'am to officers works when answering a question from an officer (if you're enlisted) - if you askthem a question it would be "Rank last name". So from a military perspective it works for me. Of course I only spent 80% of my life around and in the military so I could be wrong.

It shouldn't be a big deal to someone who isn't an egotistical ass. Ma'am is certainly not a condescening term, and if someone is being polite than get over yourself and let them be polite.

Yes Senator, and may I add you have earned several other titles so I hope you do not get offended when I address you by those. Would that be OK with you, stupid cunt. I hope that did not offend your anti American pinko ass. WHat is that Liberal Bitch? Yes Ma'am I could just go back to answering Yess ma'am and No Ma'am.

Good for her. She SHOULD be addressed as Senator. Just my 2cents, at the start of all statements, question and answers almost all start with Senator or Congressmen/woman then proceed with either informalities like sir, ma'am, when answering yes or no questions. This was a yes ma'am, there was no reason he should have to keep saying yes senator each time. It never happens and it nevers gets called out. She was making an irrelevant point.

I was at his house watching college football most of the time and he still made me say it. I just don't see the point in an informal setting with someone who's close to the family. His daughter had the same type of attitude. She was a J.A.P. Nice girl, but way to demanding for me. Still friends though.

I would say that is 'cordial', not humiliating. A General Officer got called out by the Chairman of a Senate Committee for not referring to her by the "proper salutation." Believe me, he was totally and completely humiliated and also believe me when I say that she knew exactly what she was doing. Barbara Boxer is into Barbara Boxer and doesn't give a shit about the levees in New Orleans, the State of California, or the United States of America. She is into the title that she has "worked so hard to get." This is the very definition of what is wrong in our Congress. Many of our elected officials are egotistical socialites not statesmen, and Boxer is at the very top of that list.
