It will be interesting to see the football playoff. In 2024 the Conference Championship games will be on Dec 7. The first round of playoffs begins Dec 20. The 4 highest ranked teams have a bye and do not play until January 1, 23 days after their previous game. Are they being rewarded? It will be interesting. If that doesn't pan out I am sure adding another 4 will be no problem.

Sorta. But there is also a big difference. Nobody in hockey is sitting around for a week of nothing while future opponents are playing, unless one series goes 4 and the future opponent goes 7. But everyone is playing everyone from the start. I agree that the team with the hot goalie will usually win because that player is so important...but there is one goalie and not 4 different ones too. All these teams deserved to win. They went out and did what they were supposed to do. But we have now had two years of this system and it is pretty clear that this bye is not helpful to teams, especially if they won their divisions by early September. I also don't see it getting changed since there is no way in hell we are going to remove a team from the playoff. It will expand again like all playoffs do. The Phillies outplayed and outcoached Atlanta. As did the DBacks, Astros and Rangers to their opponents. Everyone won fair and square. Doesn't mean it is a good system. Agree to disagree. I think you’re reading to much into the time off. That time off allows you to set your rotation. Bottom line is I think what you’re seeing is that in the case of Dodgers and Braves, there just isn’t the pitching depth that is needed for a series against high quality bats. The Dodgers rotation is brutal. You’re not going to just outscore everyone 9-6 in the playoffs. So yeah you can win 100 games in the reg season and not necessarily be setup for postseason success. Don't disagree at all about the Phils. Their bullpen has seen a significant improvement, which is different than in past years. But I absolutely think a break longer than the all star break is an issue and two years of data seem to indicate it is. Lots of baseball commentators seem to at least think it has an impact.

Time off may help set your rotation and give needed rest to arms, but baseball is played nearly every day for a reason. Hitters need that daily look at live pitching to stay sharp. Even four days off is too much for most hitters. They need to keep their eyes trained on seeing the ball out of the pitchers hand and that can’t be done in a cage or with the pitching coach throwing 75 mph on the bump.

Time off is just an excuse. It just happened this year that the teams not sitting out one series - had better pitching. Phillies pitching shut down the Braves hitting. Pitching is really what wins games.

It has happened 6 times in a total of 8 series since this started two years ago. Two or three times would be normal. Agree pitching wins it and I said before series that Phils would win because of pitching. Its not an excuse. Phillies were much better and totally deserving. Everyone played by same rules. Merely suggesting that that long of a bye is not a plus for the top regular season teams.

Braves pitching was putrid in game 3. Otherwise, it was probably better than I expected. Philly pitching was great, but Braves absolutely lost series because of their lack of hitting. Again, everyone plays by the same rules so there is no issue of unfair to particular teams. But I think that to not recognize there is zero reward for winning the regular season is wishful thinking.
Also, if we are going to do this, then make these 7 game series instead of 5. No days off unless you are going from one coast to the other coast. MLB teams frequently go 14 or 15 days with no days off. Why do we suddenly need to have so many off during the playoffs....one reason, TV ratings and not wanting to have too many games on at the same time.

So it had nothing to do with the Philly pitching? Who said that? The Braves lack of hitting was in great part caused by some great pitching by the Phillies. But the Braves also played 7 games against these same Phillies just last month in which the Braves averaged almost 6 runs per game, versus 2 runs per game in this series. Pretty noticeable difference.

So it had nothing to do with the Philly pitching? How did you come to that conclusion. My response was to Atlanta pitching being putrid. Strider gave up 4 earned runs in 2 games. He got one run in support. Of course it was great pitching by Philly. But to imply it wasn't a hitting issue either in incorrect. Bottom line is that Philly was the much better team and deserved to advance. Doesn't mean that this system is without flawes.

And the great pitchers get at least two starts in a 7 game series. So in effect - a team's 1 and 2 pitchers win games 1 and 2 and 5 and 7. That hardly ever happens anymore with the stacked relief pitchers. But I remember way back when the Braves were still in Boston - Spahn and Sain and pray for rain.

The teams with the best regular season records don’t always win championships and that’s fine, but I’ve come to realize that there is a segment of the population that thinks that this somehow entitles teams to the championship, which it does, the regular season division championship which gives you the advantage of a little rest. To say the Braves couldn’t hit for shit in 4 games was due to being off a week is also just a poor excuse. If you said they were rusty in Game 1 because they were off perhaps I buy that, but not all 4 games. The Phils staff was dealing.
Now if you question why they didn’t get the Dbacks Instead of the Phils, I’ll listen there. Lol.

But if you dont believe a week off after playing meaningless games for 3 previous weeks isnt stupid, we part company. And again this is not an excuse. They got beat by the better team. But 6 series out of 8 is way above what should be normal. Meanwhile, on to football.

So it had nothing to do with the Philly pitching? Philly pitching was good. I would not go as far as the accolades you are giving out. They walked enough to lose, the Braves didn't capitalize. Part pitching, but that is what got them into the situation. A little well played small ball and it would be a different story.

Rangers shut out Stros 2 to 0 last night. Not much offense as starting pitching was good for both teams - Rangers better.

Phila picking right up where they left off. Bats are scorching hot and Wheeler is filthy.

I think Phils win it all. Top of their rotation is tough, they hit as well or better than anyone and can steal a run if they need to.

But yes, everything that you said is spot on and as I told my dad, last postseason Castelllanos couldn’t hit off of a tee, while this postseason he’s tearing the cover off the ball.

I'm sure dpb is very disappointed that his Stros are down 0-2 and heading to Dallas where the Texans have done really well.

I used to love the MLB postseason. No matter if the Braves didn't make it, or got bounced in the divisional series, I watched every game I could. This new format has killed it for me. I haven't watched a single inning of either LCS, and I'm not going to. Same for the WS. I just don't care. Especially when we see two teams who finished 2nd in their division play for the WS. I just have no interest in that.

Rangers playing very good right now. Stros almost caught them last night after they fell behind early. Astros have a killer relief corps - not so for the Rangers. Stros just need to get the Ranger starter out early. But give it to the Rangers - 7 straight wins in the playoffs. Stros need to win Wednesday for sure to have a chance.

The Nola brothers were great players at LSU - Of course Aaron was a pitcher and his brother Austin was a SS. Austin made the show as a catcher.

I guess I should worry that if the Phils win tonight and finish the Dbacks tomorrow night with the ALCS going the distance that the Phils might not be able to comeback with so much rest for the WS. 😉
