I am a Michigan man, and there are a few things I have to say...
I am embarassed. Why? b/c I have no choice. I was born a Michigan man, and I will die one. B/c I have no choice.
What happened yesterday was NOT an aberration. It was NOT an upset. It was an embarassment. Not because ASU wasn't good, but b/c Michigan didn't care. And when they did, it didn't matter.
I stand today, EMBARASSED to be a Michigan man.
As most of you know, I played basketball in college. I played hard. I'm "5 foot nothing, 100 and nothing" to quoth the movie "Rudy." I grew up in Detorit. I was taught by my UM alum parents to worship Ann Arbor. I did so b/c Michigan lost a few games when I grew up...3-4 a season...but they won when it counted. I grew up that way. Win when it counts, if nothing else. Shock the world, b/c you can.
I lost a lotta games in college. But ONE thing you NEVER heard from opponents' coaches was "your team doesn't try. They don't play hard." Why? B/c we sucked, but we played hard. We lost to the teams we were supposed to, upset a few, and WON the games we should.
I give all the credit in the world to ASU, b/c they WON the game. They outplayed a better team...vastly. They deserve the adoration they get, and Michigan deserves the spite they get.
CFF was right. Michigan is overrated. Cassels was right. Michigan chokes. Today I stand embarassed to be associated with the degree on my wall. Michigan embarassed me. Lloyd Carr embarassed me. The entire program embarassed who I am and what I stand for, and my parents...big boosters...agree. Kudos to ASU, and shame on Michigan. I am a Michigan man today...but only because I was born forced to be. Regardless...I am embarassed.

I haven't cried so hard as I did yesterday since I lost my 1st fiancee. I can't explain how embarassed I am.
UM is cut off from my financial benefits until they all show what Mike Hart showed...they they give a shit. B/c I don't give my coin to those who don't share my beliefs. I wish I had another degree hanging on my wall.

It's a f......king football game. It isn't life and death. Get over it. How many times did the phrase, "Wait 'till next year" come from the mouths of Brooklyn Dodger fans. Then, a year after they finally beat the Yankees their team moves to Los Angeles.
At least the Wolverines are still in Ann Arbor.

SI...
Just telling you how I feel. I went to a concert tonight. The lead singer made a point of saying that his bass player was an Asu grad. The entire crowd cheered on high, as they should have.
There are periously few things I'm proud of. Being an athlete in college is one of them. When I see those that I know...those that I pledge money to...those that I support go out there and not care, with all due respect, it makes me ashamed. It makes me feel like I'm tossing my money and my support in the toilet. Pardon me while you crack your "ASU would win the Big 10" jokes, but I hope one day your team, your alum has the tradition to feel how bad it sucks to be the butt of jokes across an entire nation.

Teddy, I do know how you feel. When Louisville or Kentucky blow a basketball game they clearly should win, and it has happened too many times, I get really POd. But I do know that it is an aberation and not a consistant occurrance. I get over it and move on.
Michigan has a good team this year and most every year in football. They just happened to be on the receiving end of great disappointment this season.
They still can win the rest of their games. It won't be easy and I'm sure they'll take a lot of guff from opposing fans on the road. But nothing worth a substantial amount is ever easy to obtain.
You never know how a football will bounce.
Remember what Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over 'till it's over."
SIObserver
PS, "There is a story involving Yogi Berra, the well-known catcher for the New York Yankees, and Hank Aaron, who at that time was the chief power hitter for the Milwaukee Braves. The teams were playing in the World Series, and as usual Yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter, intended to pep up his teammates on the one hand, and distract the Milwaukee batters on the other. As Aaron came to the plate, Yogi tried to distract him by saying, “Henry, you’re holding the bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron didn’t say anything, but when the next pitch came he hit it into the left-field bleachers. After rounding the bases and tagging up at home plate, Aaron looked at Yogi Berra and said, “I didn’t come up here to read.”

Teddy,
I have an idea how you feel. I felt downright betrayed in consecutive seasons by Oklahoma. Lots of "choklahoma jokes". It was worse maybe that it happened at season's end, after a brilliant performance all year, then to just fall apart with no explanation (KSU, LSU, USC). At least with Oregon last year, the average intelligent fan realizes the loss wasn't entirely the fault of the team. But those blowouts in the bowl games shellshocked everyone who was a fan. It's devastating to realize your talented team can't or won't get it together, and it can't be attributed entirely to the opposition.
Time will pass, and the misery fades, and gradually you start watching again.. and maybe after a season you can be proud to be a fan again in public. Think of the shame felt by those who could have done something about it-- the players. I expect it will jar them into a humility and work ethic that will propel them to even greater things down the line. Be patient. Sorry bro~

Teddy, you'll live to fight another day! This is what makes being a fan of our teams exciting. We love them and can't stand to see them have problems. (WVU has had many of those trying times over the years.) I've growled at our team, at our coaches, at our players, at our fans, at our university, at our state for decades of and on. But in the end they are still mine and I love them to death. You all have had the bar set very high for so long that you get used to excellence... and when there is an aberation or a mental let down it sticks out like a sore thumb. Shake it off, friend! We all love cfb and you'll get the wind back in your sails.

What is the word going around the great Michigan this morning about Lloyd Carr. I saw on TV were a bunch of people were wanting him to resign. The players play the game and decide the game but the coaches should have them ready and Michigan was clearly not ready. I honestly think they thought all they had to do was show up. 99 times out of 100 a team like Michigan does just have to show up against teams like App St. but that once in a lifetime moment happened Saturday. That is the 16 seed beating the one seed in hoops, no that is worse than that cause the 16 seed would have beaten App. St. Anyway, expect Michigan to rebound and rebound well, they have too much talent to not respond. National Championship is out of the picture but they can still salvage a respectable season.

Teddy:
In 2003 Auburn was preseason #5 going into playing USC in our opener. I watched in shock as Auburn's offense completely failed to show up, we were a one legged man in an ass kicking contest as a result and we lost 23-0. Next game we put up 3 points to Georgia Tech. That season everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I remember the Ole Miss game where Campbell tossed it to a wide open, and I mean WIDE ASS OPEN Ben Obamanu and he just dropped it. I actually remember letting out an audible, girlish scream. I decided then and there Auburn football couldn't kill me. I love that team. I love that school. I love that town. But Auburn football can't kill me.
Michigan lost historically. We all know it. But guess what? Tomorrow is another day. Michigan will play another team this Saturday. And you will cheer your head off for them. What choice do you have? You're not going to stop loving the team you root for because of one loss. Historic or not, that's all it is, and it's not even in conference.
But, shit like this takes time. I understand that. Hopefully you will recover from this because trust me, it'll pass.

People around Michigan want him gone. Now. I'm one of those. I've been a Carr apologist for years, but this is over the top. The team is just the national butt of jokes, and that doesn't happen if...even despite the piss poor effort and prep...Lloyd doesn't make stupid coaching decisions. Going for 2 in the 3rd? Going for 2 again? Instead of going for the throat after the INT with 4 mins left (@ which point I admit there was a sigh of relief, b/c I thought even Carr would just end it) playing for an FG.

Teddy, as a former athlete, I think you should know as well as I that only the players on the field KNOW what kind of effort they are putting forth. I get so frustrated when I hear people question the heart and motivation of players. There is nothing more insulting to an athlete than to question his heart. How do you know Henne, Long, Manningham, etc. weren't giving it their all??? Just because Hart's numbers stick out doesn't mean he was the only one putting forth effort.
The results of that game came down to one thing and one thing only. PREPARATION. That Michigan team was NOT prepared for that game and that falls on one person..... the head coach. If Michigan comes into that game with a ball conrol offensive gameplan (or adjusts to one early), UM wins that game. If Michigan doesn't commit 7 penalties and leave the special teams units in the locker room, UM wins that game. If Michigan coaches realize that there are only a half a handful of athletes on the offensive side of the ball for ASU that can beat them (and gameplan accordingly), UM wins that game.
I like to use the option attack as an example. You can have the greatest defensive talent in the world, but if you go into a game without practicing against the option, you will get gorged. I think that is what happened to the Wolverines. Their defense was simply not prepared and players were not put in the propper positions to succeed.
Conversely, the UM offense could have used their O-line size and superiority to run smashmouth football at the ASU defense. Instead, they played to the ASU strength (speed), by putting the ball in the air 50% of the time. My goodness, UM averaged almost 10 yards/run!!! UM had more rushing yards, more passing yards, fewer turnovers, and more first downs. But they lost the time of possession battle and racked up more penalty yards, and their special teams were a disaster. If that doesn't SCREAM coaching, I don't know what does.

But Auburn football can't kill me. Those don't even come close to comparing. USC was coming off an 11-2 season and an Orange Bowl victory. Then they only managed to share the NC in 2003. Guess who they beat by 14 in the Rose bowl to secure their share? Michigan. Really my heart bleeds for you. Ole Miss finished 10-3 in 2003. Ga Tech was only 7-6, but they're still a mid level BCS conference team. Those losses were dissappointing I'm sure, but they don't reach the level of embarrassment that losing to a D1AA school does.

And I know it doesn't compare, but the domination UF has on UGA at the moment sure doesn't feel good from this man's perspective, but it does suck and I do hate it.
Take care Teddy and hope the tide turns real soon for ya.

I dunno, there used to be this mystique about Michigan. Like I said, growing up we'd lose 3 games a year, be embarassed, and then hang one on OSU and some other team in a bowl game. It showed they might not be the best...but when it mattered most, they found a way. Somewhere along the line Carr has brought an attitude in where that is no longer the case. LIke I've posted before, I met a coach from another school a few years ago and he said what we all now know...Michigan doesn't play hard. They have better talent than anyone, but they don't play hard or smart.
The sad thing is, I think the entire program owes an apology to the rest of the Big 10 for embarassing it. No matter what they do...whether they go 0-12 or 11-1, this loss won't leave them. Which sucks, b/c maybe ASU deserves better than that. You know Delaney is crossing his fingers hoping, praying that Michigan doesn't make a run in the Big 10. B/c for them to finish in the top even HALF of it...you know he'd hear "well, ASU woulda finished @ least (insert number above Michigan's standing here) in the Big 10...har har har."
Kellbosko...I think we've talked about the questioning athlete heart before. I watched those same guys just MOW people down last year. I saw a lotta those same guys let Minnesota 2 years ago run thru holes the size of Vermont and then play a vastly better Penn State team to a last 2nd win in Ann Arbor. A lot of that has to do with effort. You say you're an athlete...so you know...sometimes whatever "it" is just isn't there. For me it was taking a few too many jumpers, not getting low enough on D, making stupid passes, missing free throws...things like that where you just aren't focused n shit. Hell, it happens in pickup games for me sometimes. You see the other team, know that from a talent standpoint they're not on your level, and you slack off. Same reason as why a 10 handicapper plays with a few scratch players and shoots a 77 and then plays with a few 25 handicappers the next day and shoots a 95. They did not put forth the effort. More mentally than anything, but they didn't do it nonetheless. Coaches deserve the blame in situations like this, but Lloyd can call stupid plays and decisions all he wants, he's not the one out there executing poorly and making the bad decisions.

Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr
On the game ... "Give Appalachian State credit. I thought they did a great job. I felt that we were not a well prepared football team. That is my job and I take full responsibility for that. We played much better defense in the second half but penalties killed us in this game. They stopped too many drives. In the second half we turned the football over twice and we had penalties that put us into bad down-and-distance situations. We had a bad snap on a two-point conversion. We didn't execute. We simply made too many mistakes and had too many missed opportunities. Now we have to fight back and we have to deal with some adversity to find out what we are made of."

I don't know Teddy, I just watched that game and saw a Michigan offense that could basically do whatever they wanted against ASU. I thought the effort was there on offense. I guess I'm pinning it on coaching because of the defense and special teams. The defense ended the season with two subpar performances against tOSU and USC, and lost half it's starters in the offseason. You would have thought that A) the defensive coaches had an entire offseason to analyze and correct the problems and B) there would be a lot of defensive intensity to fill those starting roles and prove the neysayers wrong. Special teams are 90% discipline and 10% athleticism, so most deficiencies can be pinned on coaching and preparation.
I don't have the UM playbook, so I don't know what the players were supposed to do on D every snap. But I know they are deep with talent, and if it was indeed an effort problem Saturday, the coaches should have been pulling players and using replacements to get the job done.
