Phil fined for ref comments:
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NBA has fined Lakers coach Phil Jackson $25,000 for criticizing the officials during Game 4 of the Finals.
The league also penalized the Lakers $25,000 on Saturday for Jackson's comments, which came during an interview with ABC between the first and second quarters of their 99-91 overtime victory Thursday.
Jackson said there were some "bogus" calls after the Lakers' Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum each picked up two fouls in the first quarter.
Game 5 of the NBA Finals is at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC.
While Pietrus gets nothing:
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NBA on Friday quickly completed its review of Mickael Pietrus' two-handed shove into Pau Gasol's back in the final seconds of Game 4 of the NBA Finals and ruled that no further action will be taken against the Orlando Magic swingman.
More backwards thinking from the NBA.

The refs aren't going to win or lose the series for anyone. I highly doubt any of us if put in live game situation without the benefit of a multitude of replays could do any better than the refs that are currently doing the job, in fact I dare say it may be quite a bit worse.

Yep, the Pietrus slam in Gasol's back was bad. What about Kobe's intentional foul on Howard to stop him from scoring in OT (or was it the 4th)? Call it both ways.
To boot, Jackson always says something like this to get into the ref's head. He is an excellent manipulator and one of the primary reasons the Lakers will win the title and he'll have won his (ridiculous!) 10th title to go down as one the best, if not the best, coaches of all time.
25K is a drop in the bucket for phat Phil.

WER, There is a big difference between intentionally fouling someone from the front by grabbing them and shoving them in the back from behind when they are up on the rim for a dunk. As someone who landed funny and shattered there ankle and tore two tendons on such a play I can tell you that a foul like that can put a damper on a season, or even end a career.

It was actually a double punch to Gasol's back after he dunked, which is presumably because Pietrus was convinced Gasol didn't have to do it in the first place because the dunk was academic in the first place. The game was over. And, I'm betting Pietrus was mad as hell that the Magic blew a game they should have won.
But Gasol had a hold of the rim and wasn't in danger, I don't think. If Gasol had not already held on to the goal and were just in free space I would agree with you, he could have been in serious danger. None of this excuses was Pietrus did, by the way.
I want to add in a similar position on a far, far smaller scale I was in a position where I could have pulled a Pietrus on a guy who wanted to dunk on our team after the game was over. The guy was simply trying to rub it in. My teammates wondered why I didn't send the guy into orbit because what the guy was trying to do was in poor taste. Very clearly an 'FU' statement. I decided it wasn't worth me injuring the guy to make a point, not to mention a fight (and this was on base) would have most assuredly started. I'm glad I didn't do it.
Gasol showed a lot of control by not going after Pietrus, but maybe Gasol didn't have to dunk in the first place. The game was over.
Kobe clobbered Howard and could have injured his shoulder by doing what he did . The fouls are comparable, especially when Howard would have most assuredly scored the basket and Kobe knew it. Bryant wasn't even T'd up for that and he most certainly deserved to be.
The difference is not as huge as you're making it out to be.

I guess we're just going to have to disagree on this one WER. Meanwhile, ESPN is reporting a potential Shaq to the Cavs trade. I was wondering: If LeBron wins the Championship next year are people going to scream that LeBron couldn't win one without Shaq?

I know you're not serious. Then again you are a Laker fan, so maybe you are.

The Shaq talks were ongoing mid-season. I wouldn't trade for him. He doesn't fit. Get a good, quick big man in the Gasol mode. I'd have to think of one who'd fit for Cleveland but for now I'm late for church.

The trade talks are a short term fix for both the Suns and Cleveland to get cap relief after 2010, while hopefully getting one last useful season out of Shaq.

Talk between the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers of a trade that would have Shaquille O'Neal playing with LeBron James next season has not gone beyond the preliminary stages and no deal is imminent, two executives with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.
The clubs have not spoken within the past few days, but sources say talks of a possible trade involving O'Neal, Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic never completely died after it was first discussed in February.
O'Neal, 37, will make $20 million next season in the final year of his current deal, while Wallace will make $14 million in the last year of his contract and Pavlovic $4.9 million with only $1.5 million guaranteed.
The salary swap is close enough to make the trade work under the salary-cap guidelines, and the Suns would save $10 million in the transaction -- $4.5 million in salary and $5.5 million in luxury-tax payments.
They could save even more money if Wallace takes a buyout, a possibility that was raised when Wallace said he was considering retirement after the Cavs' Eastern Conference finals loss to the Orlando Magic.
If the Suns acquired him and bought out his contract for less than face value, they could lower their actual expenditures, although the full amount would still count toward their luxury-tax total.
Cavs GM Danny Ferry and Suns president Steve Kerr, former teammates in San Antonio, are good friends who speak often, and a possible Shaq trade has always remained on the back burner.
Cleveland aggressively pursued O'Neal in February, offering Wallace and Pavlovic. Phoenix was not interested in Wallace because his contract was not expiring and instead wanted Wally Szczerbiak.
Eventually, Phoenix pulled out of the deal because it wanted to see if the trio of O'Neal, Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire could make a deep playoff run under then newly-hired coach Alvin Gentry.
Now convinced that they are no longer contenders, the Suns fully intend to move one of their big contracts. With Stoudemire being a young building block and Nash a local icon, O'Neal, whose salary is the largest on the team, makes the most sense.
Information from ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard and ESPN.com's J.A. Adande was used in this report.

Either way, Kobe haters from across the land (and on this very board) have whined for years that Kobe can't win one without Shaq, so I think it would be hilarious if LeBronze won one with Shaq.
And now Game 5.....

I heard that the reported players involved for Shaq, were Ben Wallace, and Pavlovic. If I were Cleveland I'd do that trade in a heart beat.

Lakers will win and the Zen Master will have 10 rings. Pretty damn impressive. LeBron needs a big man that can intimidate, score, block and be a positive impact on the team. Shaq can do that for a year or two with Cleveland and the chance to play with LeBron will have him extra motivated. He will have played with Kobe, Wade and now maybe James. 3 of the best of the generation. And it would be ironic, but it's a matter of time before James wins a Championship with or w/out Shaq.
