What a freakin goat rope! Greg McGarity should be ashamed of himself.
Seth Emmerson AJC
ATHENS — Next week, Georgia’s new head coach will be coaching Alabama’s defense, and in his place Georgia will be led in bowl practice by South Carolina’s new co-offensive coordinator.
Welcome to the strange state of college football coaching.
Bryan McClendon, who was announced as one of South Carolina’s newest assistant coaches on Wednesday, will still coach Georgia in the Taxslayer Bowl. That word came from athletics director Greg McGarity, who said there had been no reconsideration to McClendon serving as interim head coach.
As things stand now, only two of Georgia’s coaches in bowl practice next week and in the Jan. 2 bowl game will be sticking around the next day: Defensive assistants Kevin Sherrer and Tracy Rocker.
The offensive staff is experiencing a complete housecleaning: McClendon is leaving for South Carolina, running backs coach Thomas Brown is going to Miami, offensive line coach Rob Sale is going to Louisiana-Monroe (according to 247Sports), and tight ends coach John Lilly has already cleaned out his office, according to two people familiar with Georgia’s program.
Lilly turned down a chance to join re-join Mark Richt in Miami, said one of those with knowledge of the situation.
The other full-time assistant coach on Georgia’s offense this year, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, is already gone, not coaching in the bowl after his job was filled by Jim Chaney. The offensive line job was also filled by Sam Pittman, but Sale is staying with the Bulldogs through the bowl.
Then there’s Todd Hartley, who has been Georgia’s on-campus recruiting coordinator and stepped into a coaching role this month, leading the special teams. He’s also going to Miami to join Richt.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has been working to fill out his new staff, but has also been preparing Alabama’s defense for the Cotton Bowl match-up with Michigan State on Dec. 31. Glenn Schumann, who has been announced as another defensive assistant, has also been in Tuscaloosa to work through the playoffs.
So there are five staff jobs that have been filled, and four to go. The most high-profile opening is at defensive coordinator, and Smart hasn’t ruled out hiring a special teams coach.
Georgia players report to Jacksonville for bowl practice on Dec. 27, and hold their first workout early the next morning. That will begin a strange week where most of the men wearing the “G” on their chest know they will only be doing so for a few more days.
Staff writer Chip Towers contributed to this report.

I guess the only thing to do is to hope Sparty wins so we can get some semblance of order.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward would be interested in joining Kirby Smart’s coaching staff at the University of Georgia.
Ward, a former do-it-all offensive sparkplug for the Bulldogs, told The Paul Finebaum Show he’d like to try his hand on Smart’s staff.
“I’ve still got the itch to coach. I’ve always said, one day I wanted to be a coach. … When Kirby Smart’s name came up as head coach, it’s something you get that itch for,” Ward said. “Man, how great would that be to be part of his staff and help my alma mater at the University of Georgia and try to get them to the promised land? Who knows what’s going to happen in the future? I’m still blessed for the opportunity to work at NBC. I enjoy my job each and every weekend, but in the back of my mind, it’s hard for me not to think about what it would be like to go back.”
The two were teammates at Georgia. Ward played for the Bulldogs from 1994-1997, amassing 1,066 rushing yards, 1,965 receiving yards and another 918 passing yards. Smart was a four-year letterman as a defensive back from 1995-1998, making 13 career interceptions and earning All-SEC honors in 1998.
Now, with news coming out of Columbia that the South Carolina Gamecocks have hired UGA wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon, there is an opening for Ward to return to his alma mater. It is a long shot that Kirby contacts the Georgia great, but it sure would an ideal Christmas for the DawgNation.
“My phone’s been ringing off the hook, and people are telling me that timing is everything,” Ward said. “That’s something I would be intrigued with.”

I mean, I don't like the stance I am kind of forced to take, and willingly so, but 9 wins is a must, if you ask me. Yeah, it might correct itself eventually, somewhere down the road, but if you have followed Georgia football from inside those who preach from the perimeter, then you will realize that this is supposed to be the Messiah, the man who will take UGA football to the Alabama level of success. And, if he is all that, then Georgia should win at least 9 games next year, when all is said and done. He is far from a talentless team. And, if you ask those UGA fans "who know best", he is a far superior Coach to Coach Mark Richt.
Yeah, I am a Georgia Bulldog, through and through, and will get my ass kicked if I feel it necessary to get involved on such a level, but I do not get this 180* change of heart and willingness to give CKS all this leeway, yet so hypercritical of CMR for every "misstep" he made. Jus' sayin'...

I agree NCB, and Hines Ward I think would make a great addition to the staff. Hopefully CKS has heard him, and contacts him soon. One of the best dawgs ever in my opinion, he was the epitome of playing anywhere coaches wanted him to and being successful at it. I was ecstatic when the steelers got him, and now, to have him return home to coach, OH YEAH!!!!!

First time HC with a first time DC. The only positive thing would be that Kirby would have to help run the D and keep his hands off Chaney

Understand he comes with some NCAA baggage. If true it is clear Georgia coaches are operating under different rules than previously.

Man, were emotions flowing when CMR was fired, and CKS chose to stay at Alabama though their run. Looks like CKS was the exact hire needed at Georgia, and he answered AND rang that proverbial bell. So happy it worked out exactly as time had intended.

I know I was more pissed at the way McGarity treated Richt than anything. It was a time for change, but how it was done was bush league. Perhaps, because the University hasn't had much tradition of firing coaches...5 in 60 years, they had no idea what they were doing. And UGA went from having to have Richt pay assistants out of pocket and have facilities barely above Vandy to an unlimited checkbook. Richt was simply too nice.
Having said that, Kirby developed rapidly after that first year. Since 2017 he has been in rarified air.
